New Car Fever
Purchasing a new or used car can be exciting and fun, but don't forget to contact your insurance agent before you drive off the lot!
Many times, when purchasing a new or used car, clients ask how many days can they wait to add the car on their insurance policy? The answer can vary per state, and even per insurance carrier. As a good rule of thumb, call us or your insurance agent immediately to avoid any confusion.
My Dealership Said They Would Handle
Often a dealership may contact us or your agent to verify insurance coverage, but this does not guarantee they have requested to add the newly purchased car for you. The dealership has no authority to add or make changes to your policy without you.
Why Should I Call?
An insurance policy is a contract between the named insured (you) and the insurance company.
Verification of changes to your policy may require your authorization by signing a change form, or a verbal verification, depending on the normal practice of your insurance agent.
In many cases, you will need to contact us or your agent to verify what coverage is wanted/needed:
- liability, comprehensive, collision, after market replacement parts, roadside assistance, loss of use coverage, etc.
- will the car be replacing an existing car/truck?
- who will be driving the vehicle?
- whose name will the vehicle be titled in?
Commercial Fleets/Commercial Autos
With commercial fleets or commercial autos, there may be coverage depending on the type of policy for newly purchased vehicles, but contact us or your agent to confirm and make any changes.
Two Myths
Myth: If you have liability only (coverage for others), and you replace the car with a newer model, you automatically have physical damage and liability on your newer model vehicle.
A replacement vehicle will have the exact insurance coverage as the previous car on the policy. In order to add additional coverages, including physical damage (comprehensive and collision), you will need to contact us or your agent to add to the policy. If you have an at-fault accident prior to updating your policy, there would potentially be no coverage for the damage done to your car.
Myth: You have 30 days from the date you purchased the car before you have to add on your car insurance policy.
Immediately contact us or your agent when you are adding or replacing a vehicle on your policy.
